I can’t help but believe that California will again be the bellwether for the USA.
In my time in the USA I have seen California signal major trends, from the neocon movement of Nixon/Reagan, tax protest, the rise of megachurches, growth of civil rights for some repressed groups (e.g. LGBTQ+), and so on. And this predates me — it’s a long term trend.
Birth rates are dropping and there is a demographic bulge with the boomers. Instead of laughing at California as the WSJ likes to do, people should consider if it’s what the future holds where they are. Some of the trends discussed (huge separation between mean and median income, overt ecological shifts) are already widespread, and increasing, in the rest of the country.
