Serious question: What's the gold standard in blocking certain content for an age group, without tracking ones identity?
My initial thought would it would be just making it super easy for their guardians to distribute and control device content. But let the control end at that echelon of power; Not even the local councils or schools should be given the power to regulate social media for kids to this extent IMO, let alone the govt
The more "digi-ID so we are sure you are old enough, bitte" keeps been pushed, the clearer it's about tracking and not about children. No matter how much they love to frame it the other way around. Unless they want to admit they are total inepts.
I'd have thought an OAuth flow to a government run ID system, to create an account you first must verify your age by redirecting to the ID provider logging in via FaceID/Fingerprint to verify it's you and then you are redirected back to the original site with a verification code.
Admittedly on paper that means the Gov system would know which sites you were approved for, not logging that would require legislation to not store these logs.
My hero usecase with these tools is to auto pull investments from Fidelity 401K account + Schwab brokerage + BYOBrokerage.
Then combine them and break them down by country/geography(e.g. ex-US or US or world) and then type(small, mid, large) and then finally by income strategy(growth, value, fixed, defined outcome etc)
Lets say my strategy from now is: 15% on an ex-US mid cap, 15% US Largecap, 15% ACWI growth, 15% Emerging market growth, 40% in short treasury fixed income. If I already have some ETFs already, can this be used to bucket and calculate what is the current state of the ETFs I hold against the strategy?
Can it do that for Mutual funds in like retirement accounts?
Context: I want to implement my own portfolio using some weights on a basket of ETFs. The ETFs are selected by country/geography(e.g. ex-US or US or world) and then type(small, mid, large) and then finally by income strategy(growth, value, fixed, defined outcome etc) based on expected returns.
I feel like mapping for realtime directions for navigation with traffic and a PoI dataset info is a "money sinkhold" infrastructure problem. No one will pay for it especially if its "free" with google/apple.
Its just too difficult to manage _alone_ as an open source or not-for profit project or even a subscription based thing. Though there are nice niche alternatives like alltrails, nothing complete exists IIUC.
A company will have to have a solid adjacent source of income to support such massive projects, analogously to like how rust is paid for by mozilla by money from their other sources(like browser rev sharing). But as a new company, criticially, that rev stream cannot be _easily_ made from people's location data _alone_, not only because of privacy concerns, but because location product market is quite fragmented with 1000's of different products and it would become hard to scale those products to match the revenue stream needed to keep this kind of massive product alive.
I feel that at this point this service is so critical it could be provided as a utility.
My head explodes when I read aabout the scamsters that are equifax and their so called "strategic partnership" with workday on payroll data.
We all should be aware that equifax — via their "strategic partner" with workday — has your ENTIRE work history with *each and every* payroll check AMOUNT ever sent to you by any W2 employer, the employer info, your address etc. It sells this info to god knows who. Its a shocking amount of info. Previous discussion on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29834753
I recall a year or so ago, I had frozen this info from being dissemenated to employers or sold to companies from https://employees.theworknumber.com/employee-data-freeze/ link but it seems to ask me to re-register again with your SSN and DOB. WTF. That registration would still not stop them from collecting this info.
There is no way I can even partially delete any part of this data, like I dunno the dates on which I recieved each of my paychecks. Why the fuck is that in the report?
The pay amounts also include any RSUs granted and NSOs sold.
It took many back and forths with my employer’s HR department and executives to get them to tell ADP to stop sending this info to Equifax (work number)
I just used AI studio for recognizing text from a relative's 60 day log of food ingested 3 times a day. I think I am using models/gemini-flash-latest and it was shockingly good at recognizing text, far better than ChatGPT 5.1 or Claude's Sonnet (IIRC its 4.5) model.
Its response I have captured here https://pasteboard.co/sbC7G9nuD9T9.png is shockingly good. I could only spot 2 mistakes. And those that seems to have been the ones even I could not read or was very difficult for me to make out what the text was.
I basically fed it all 60 images 5 at a time and made a table out of them to correlate sugar levels <-> food and colocate it with the person's exercise routines. This is insane.
So one thing I feel is that many old folk find it impossible to understand and build with multiple UI/UX abstractions they are not familar with. Take the file explorer(or whatever mac has for viewing files) abstraction.
If you aren't familiar with the concept of where files are found — e.g. where are downloaded files — it becomes infinitely more difficult to them to remember and add another UX/UI abstraction e.g. how to open a file using a suitable application. Lack of homogenity between OSes and Platforms makes it all the more harder.
This just keeps repeating for everything. Making attachments, knowing how to clear browser history, bookmarking, opening and searching through mail etc.
I would imagine this could be one of the inputs along with a STT system as context to an LLM. Because in general we can speak faster than we can write/type and for me, specifically, after a point in the day typing creates a higher cognitive load than speaking.
1. "Create a reminder for reading this email at 5:00 pm" and this could infer what to do from the screen shot's description(plus a local MCP tool for calendar)
2. "Can you fetch that file form that project in that workspace and implement the pattern in the code on my vscode terminal?" It can lower cognitive fatigue of typing and clicking a bunch of place.
3. Take notes as I describe something on the screen. It could be for prompt composition e.g. get the link from my browser and the file on vscode and write code that does XYZ.
My initial thought would it would be just making it super easy for their guardians to distribute and control device content.
