Curious as to the adoption of full disk encryption among the HN community. What kind of performance penalty have you paid, if any?

Yes! Any modern Fedora (my laptop operating system) or Ubuntu install lets you choose LUKS at install time and sets it up completely from the GUI. If you're stuck with windows, take a look at true crypt.

You never know when something like a stolen laptop could come back to haunt you. Unless, like me, you're a victim of serious business identity fraud.


Yes - PGP. Very little performance hit.
