I guess everyone will have their own preferred niche option, but I'm disappointed the author didn't even mention elementaryOS. If they tried it and discarded it as they did Gnome, I'd be curious to know why.
I tried it like a decade ago, when I was a macOS fan. It was such a cheap rip-off with not even visual (not to say functional) things being consistent and very much off. However, these days I have no idea. I forgot they even existed. Would love to read someone else’s experience as well.
