Are crypto payments instant now ?

I don't follow this space at all but my understanding was that the "speed of the blockchain" was pretty slow.

Or maybe they mean this compared to payment processors or bank transfers that can take days ?

Blockchains are fast and and cheap now! Modern blockchains like Base, Solana, Sui (and many more) typically have block times <2 seconds, and a stablecoin transfer can cost as little as $0.0005 independent of the $ amount being transfered

Yeah, it's mostly bitcoin that's slow. SOL is sub-second, AVAX has a new architecture that has gone from a few seconds to sub-second, and while I have never used SUI I believe that one too is sub-second. ETH is still relatively slow, but not bitcoin slow.

Practically speaking yes.

There are now chains with sub-second Time to Finality and sub-cent gas fees (this was not true ~3 years ago)

Which chains have sub second block times?

Block time != time to finality

Base has sub-second block times, but because it's an Ethereum L2, it technically has ~15min TTF

SOL, AVAX, SUI

Thanks
