I can understand DC wander being a problem on copper ethernet, where the signal goes through an isolation transformer - which is there specifically to block DC; you don't want to accidentally make a ground loop between buildings after all.
But presumably an optical SFP doesn't need to block DC, because you can't make a ground loop over optical fibre?
