[flagged] Georgia Attorney-General claims that not having a phone makes you a criminal (georgiarecorder.com)

Guys like this are why so many people have hidden burner phones. Likely a lot of spouses of cops, given the 40% stat.

That is straight out of an Orwellian dystopia. Report anyone without a smartphone directly to the Ministry of Truth.

Nobody believes me when I tell them (honestly) "I'm not carrying a phone," which I never leave my house with. I think Elon Musk's recent tweet [on ditching his phone for X calls] will help adopt this as "eccentric, but believable."

Until then, I guess it's back to "being a criminal."

That's an obvious agenda-driven take and very dangerous for a prosecutor to take on. Hope the judges disagree.

"Judge Kimberly Adams agreed to admit evidence of King’s cellphone." So no, at least the judge for this case decided it was fine. Note as well that the case is over the Cop City protests, not even a criminal endeavor. Literally going to a protest without a smartphone is being presented as evidence of criminal intent.

Arguing against this is like arguing having certain "tools" in your trunk are not burglary tools when precedent has established them to be depending your circumstance, place of inquiry, time, etc. Stupid article

The recent violence by the Georgia police decoupled from any crimes or even indictments are the actions of a criminal gang lashing out indiscriminantly for "revenge" against the public.

It's become obvious that the state of Georgia police and justice system needs a complete overhaul very similar to the one the nation state of Georgia did in the mid 90s: https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/06/11/abolish-police-georgia-... In order to solve the corruption they had to fire pretty much their entire police force and start from scratch. But it worked. If Georgia the country did it, Georgia the state can.

I’d start with the same type of RICO suit they are threatening the luddites with

The corruption clearly organized crime

As an aside I have recently started leaving my phone at home for mundane things like a run to the store or walking the dog and it’s amazing how much peace I can reclaim.

Live in the moment and don’t pacify a moment’s worth of idleness by unlocking your phone. Being bored is a gift.

The title doesn't match the article:

> Last month, Deputy Attorney General John Fowler argued in state court that mere possession of a basic cellphone indicates criminal intent to commit conspiracy under Georgia’s racketeer influenced and corrupt organizations statute, better known as RICO.

Two sentences prior to your quote:

> But according to Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, having a basic phone, or a phone with no data on it, or no phone at all in the year 2024, is evidence of criminal intent.

That's too long for a headline.
