Western economies are obsessed with why their productivity has flat-lined. Companies wonder why they have such high tech budgets and so little to show for it. Cal Newport says ”your tech people are spending 90% of their time context switching”.

Perhaps these observations are connected.

At an individual level, tech people get ahead by being very active on Slack. At a company and country level, we get ahead by organising our people in a way that senior engineers most of their time focused on solving difficult and valuable problems. We need to align individual progress with macro growth.

Their productivity hasn't flatlined though. It is increasing. And increasing share of the productivity gains has been going to the richest ones.
