Advice on maintaining ownership of an OSS project while working for a company

Hey HN, I’m in the middle of building an OSS project while working for my current employer. I would ideally like to keep my project under a community namespace so I can continue to develop it if I leave the company.

I would love advice on ways to approach this. I see real success stories in things like Kubernetes and Kafka, where the developers got to work on the products at their day job but still keep them out of company control.

Every company has different policies, and whether or not they'll enforce those policies is another question as well. General rule, don't use your work computer ever to do anything related to your project, and don't do work on it during normal work hours, just to be safe. You need to look at your terms of employment, for sure.
