True. However assuming the price of high speed rail tickets will be fixed because it is a public service, the government could similarly operate an airline instead of high speed rail using the same fixed price system. What would be the cost then?


That's not how Amtrak works now, they price it the same way as airlines, last minute is more expensive.

I'm in NYC and would never, ever fly to Boston or DC. For what that's worth.


Two points on this:

1. I'm not sure how that affects my point.

2. In my experience the price difference for last minute on Amtrak has been at most about 20% (though I'm not a frequent Amtrak traveler).
