then what's the point of politicians?

To lie to the populous in a way that prevents revolution while consolidating the true power in as few hands as possible.

What a bunch of sophomoric horse shit this thread is.

Obama is a disappointment on this issue, and other things too. But there are differences between politicians, and all this blah blah about how they are all the same is a great way to get apathetic and do nothing to improve things. It can be hard work trying to pick out the good ones from the bad ones, and maybe sometimes none of them are that good. And you may feel let down when you misjudge one. But that doesn't mean you just give up and spout platitudes about woe-is-us as an excuse for not doing anything, or no longer attempting to vote for good people.

Two politicians: Nelson Mandela and Joe McCarthy. No difference?

There surely are differences among politicians. You're totally right.

For example: Obama versus Paul. Hell, for the sake of a well-rounded argument, let's throw in Romney.

Look back at the campaign speeches. Regardless of what you think about either Obama or Romney or Paul, Paul's arguments follow logically. They're consistent with history. The other guys' arguments just don't. It's simple.

You could see RIGHT THROUGH Obama and Romney, even back then.

Can you name a "good" politician from the USA? Active since 1960?

Carter.

What he said is true. Heck, it might have even prevented people from (re-)electing Obama if more people realized this. I have no idea what your problem is.

which for some reason is being kept off the front page...

Stories with "NSA" in the title get an extra penalty applied to them.

I don't know where specifically to look but these organizations are doing cool (and positive) things with tech:

It's impossible for him to do it, he's in Russia!

Here it is on HN https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5298125

I agree with clicks that it's something worth being aware of.

What do you mean by "history shows us otherwise?" Are you saying that all power structures created by humans have continued to rule indefinitely? History actually shows us the opposite, unless I misunderstood what you meant. Genuinely curious.

Looks great, just as long as there's a verification process to ensure that only designers are giving design feedback.

You wouldn't want your MBA boss looking over your code and suggesting you "break that method out into a new class," why would you want someone who's not a designer telling you to "make the logo bigger."

Joking, but seriously.

Haha, yes! This is actually supposed to be a private feedback tool so only the people you invite give you feedback. Just opened up this workspace for public. Thanks for liking it!

designers need feedback from non-designers. a designers title doesnt suddenly give them encompassing knowledge over a business and how to treat every part of a project.

The designer should have received all relevant context prior to starting the task. There will be exceptions, where a piece of context is missed, and in these cases where feedback is necessary the format of the feedback is important.

Rather than, "do it this way because businessReasons."

Instead, try, "We must not have properly conveyed this aspect of our business, here is the relevant context. Knowing this, how do we solve this design problem?"

If the designer is incapable of translating business requirements into design solutions then perhaps they're not a product/ux designer, maybe just a visual/graphic designer.

"there will be exceptions"

Yes like every project that gets designed.

Start thinking real world. Feedback comes from everywhere. A website for example can represent every aspect of a company and stakeholders who will view the early phases, either for suggestions or out of team respect will provide feedback. Doesn't mean a designer responds, but sometimes they have to suck it up and change it, even when they don't think it's better.

And stop talking like just because UX is in front of a title gives somebody special power. It doesn't. Work with a few of them and you'll realize it.

Often times, designers have to get feedback from the business guys because we do have a tendency to go with the flow. Especially if its not a full time job.

Absolutely, feedback is just more input for finding the right solution, and is valuable from any source.

Except you said earlier

"just as long as there's a verification process to ensure that only designers are giving design feedback"

You can't have it both ways.

In addition to using some of the newly created wealth for paying fixed incomes, as the author mentions, we should be using that money to make higher education free.

The author says, "let them eat cake, smoke pot, and play video games." I say let them study art history (or CS). Who knows, maybe it will inspire them to do something useful in our brave new world.

Education is not the silver bullet to a good economy. At every point in which the economy bloomed, there were sufficient jobs for people who are not college-educated. Manufacturing used to fill that gap. Part of the problem is that companies are in a race to the bottom. TechCrunch Touched on that just briefly. The most vital economies always have a read distribution of wealth through services. At some point the rest of the country, the non-tech savvy, will have to redistribute farewell to the people in the tech sector and vice versa. Wealth creation free handful of people is not the answer by itself. Because we see that does nothing for the economy at large.

Never thought about it like that, but I agree.

As a person (mini-corporation?) I have expenses; rent, food, etc. It would be great if I only had to pay taxes on my "profit", because my tax burden would then be much lower. Conversely, it would be great if corporations had to pay tax on revenue (more tax money for things we desperately need, like education and healthcare).
