It kind of reminds me of what Google Wave promised to be.

It's not how it benefits Hungary, but what benefits Orban. He's playing the playbook we're all to familiar with lately of antagonizing allies while warming up with Putin. It allows him to solidify his base while attacking the principles of democracy that might threaten his position.

> what benefits Orban

Orban’s party won reëlection. Orban is popular [1]. We can crib about disinformation and this or that, but holding Hungary accountable for his decisions is perfectly acceptable.

I love the use of the diaeresis.

They are snooty as hell, and I'll forever associate them with The New Yorker[1]. That said, I love them too! Now, if only we could do the same for awry and other words that trip up voracious readers.

They were once coming in English-language publications but now are seen in only The New Yorker, The Economist, and one other. Can anyone recall which?

Interestingly, they seem to survive most in naïve than in words like coöperate.

Co-operate is much more common than na-ive (which I've never seen). But both cooperate and naive seem reasonably well accepted.

Electric screwdrivers with not much more torque than a human hand can apply are pretty common and small. They spin much faster than I can turn a screwdriver and stop before they can strip any screw. With the right gearing and modification, I can see one easily cut through a bike lock.

It's essential to Taiwan's survival for production to physically stay focused in Taiwan. I don't know if the US would be as willing to defend Taiwan if our own recovery wasn't affected by the chip shortage.

Yep. to use a quote I've heard about another resource: "No one would care as much about stability in the Middle East if they produced toothpaste instead of Oil".

Unfortunately at the same time for Taiwan, once the West's reliance on that area of the world for production becomes less of an issue, China's timeline gets accelerated much faster to the "No but really you're part of the PRC" point. Similar to how the PRC ratcheted up control over Hong Kong in 2020 when the rest of the world was basically "Sorry HK we got COVID issues k'bye"

> Similar to how the PRC ratcheted up control over Hong Kong in 2020 when the rest of the world was basically "Sorry HK we got COVID issues k'bye"

Little more complicated than that - with HK there wasn't much the west could really do, or any obligation to do anything at all. There were no treaty obligations, as far as I'm aware of.

Obligations to Taiwan have been covered since 1979, and there's the whole matter of the PRC needing to do am amphibious invasion against a prepared foe.

I'd argue they are not similar at all, really. Similar only in PRC's ambitions.

Wow, soon we won't even be able to invite friends over anymore without the god damn copyright industry taking issue because not enough rent is being paid.

I wonder if it has something to do with your language. I know they've had other random UI issues if your language wasn't set to english. Here's my volume setting for reference: https://i.imgur.com/PwW0SwI.png

It's still frustrating though. I can't just click the volume icon and use the mouse scroller to change the volume. It takes two clicks now.

It's humbling to realize I never knew the scroll wheel would adjust the volume slider once I'd clicked the speaker icon.

The wheel does work when just hovering over many sliders, at least on Mac and in Firefox. However, whether that works in any particular app or a site is a gamble.

In some apps and sites with a specific purpose the wheel is often mapped more generally: e.g. to volume control in video players regardless of the position, unless it's over the time slider.

Hmm, where do you need two clicks to change the volume by scrolling? I can just click on the volume icon (or any of the three icons there, since they're all a big button), mouse over the volume slider, and scroll to change it. I think this is essentially the same flow as before.

It's an incredibly disingenuous article. I have a few of these gas cans and don't have any trouble with them. There absolutely is a vent in these cans. The article even mentions that they're still there, but aren't opened until you activate the top. My cans have a trigger that you pull to pour gas. As soon as you pull it, the gas flows freely. No more trying to invert the nozzle to reassemble the lid to close it anymore.

Here in Columbus, Ohio, we have a site called the Warrior Watch - https://warriorwatch.columbus.gov/ww It does a great job of showing when my street was last plowed and what it's priority is. We haven't had a lot of use for them this winter though.

One thing worth noting about that map is that it's only for major roads that appear to be the responsibility of Transport Scotland - local areas have their own snow clearing coverage e.g. Here is the map (sadly without automatic updates of gritter locations) for Fife where I live:

http://arcgisweb.fife.gov.uk/LocalViewEXT/Sites/publicWinter...

Mind you - the road where I live (which to be fair is rural and up a hill) was blocked for about a week the last time we had any serious snow and it was some local farmers with JCBs who actually cleared it.

This might be the first time I've seen someone else in Columbus on here!

Bookmarking this for use next year. Thanks.
