It is awesome that you are having fun with your son, and actively curating a path to fun with programming. It is very likely he will look back at the time you spent with him in this area with great fondness. If he wants to continue to program later or not, this quality time is the most important. Kids want to spend time with their dads.
I live in Western Australia. We have a massive skills shortage in trades such as electricians, plumbers, mechanics etc. The stigma attached to non-university careers scared parents into encouraging offspring into degrees instead. (Combined with a mining boom soaking up tradesman job hunters)
Today, I do not know any good 'tradies' that are not making at least 100k per year, and far, far more if heading to the mining industry.
Suffice to say, I do more youtube searching on how to 'fix a leaking tap' than ever before.
The actual quality is damn good, to me at least... I am still using a macbook pro as my daily that must be at least 6 or 7 years old now. (Intel core 2 duo) Maybe I am lucky, but it has been around the world with me many times, dropped and had 3 full glass spills into the keyboard. (2 were milk) BP size spills, as in, liquid was flowing out the back and the felt of the cd drive and also somehow the inside of the screen has stains. It still runs with no problems. I bumped up the ram and hard drive, and have been through 3 batteries. I have replaced the keyboard after one of the milk spills. The more we go through together, the harder it is to part... Retina screen sounds good tho.
I have gone to work at a company within the industry I have built software for.
I have enlisted other companies within the industry to use our software before it is completed, so we can get it right before release.
My job is to help them reach required outcomes in the fastest and easiest way... this process has helped me to stop trying to imput what i think it best, which only clouds what customers really want to pay for.
