Interesting definition of freedom. The top three countries happen to be the places most permissive to international tax dodgers.

> Twelve are the factors related to four key aspects of the economic environment that are graded from 0 to 100 and averaged to determine a country’s score: rule of law (and related sub-categories: property rights, government integrity, judicial effectiveness); government size (government spending, tax burden, fiscal health); regulatory efficiency (business, labor and monetary freedom); open markets (trade, investment and financial freedom).

Quite the definition they made up.

why bother to read past that? save yourself some time.

What do you mean by tax dodgers?

The US allows much more tax dodging than Singapore, for example. Try not paying your taxes or violating any other law in Singapore any time, if you want to find out.

The US isn't exactly known as a model of good governance either.

Chinese companies are optimized to grow and build stuff. US companies are optimized to deliver returns to shareholders.

Chinese stocks have historically done poorly due to poor governance and auditing failures.

No matter what your politics are, this is a pretty dark turn for the United States.

I’d bet $40 that no conservative will agree with that, and $60 that very few conservatives will agree with that.

A rather bizarre digression...

It sounds like they got freaked out on the road, swerved and hit a car next to them, and now have concocted a story where it’s actually the fault of immigrants.

The theory "Canadians made this up to explain their own bad driving" requires an explanation of why there was also a large enough rise in accidents that car insurance rates needed to double.

The theory "it happened like they said it" explains why the rise in accidents happened, and fits with normal driving habits in Hong Kong.

I'm talking specifically about this ridiculous story. Sure, it might connect to this broader phenomenon, but it sounds like you don't even know for sure if an immigrant was involved!

This is the sort of thing that occurs when the interests of the public become subordinate to the interests of a lawless aristocracy. Financial, social and public safety considerations are costs that can be transferred to the public to preserve the wealth of a few individuals.

Was there a time when the interests of the public weren't subordinate?

It's not a binary on/off thing. It's a lot, lot worse right now.

In the aristocracy's defense, we voted for this.

Without taking money out of politics, the assertion that "we" are to blame has to assume advertising and influence peddling doesn't work.

We can be subject to influence and still remain responsible for our own actions.

Even if we had the perfect combination of public funding and low small dollar donation limits we would still need discernment and to take responsibility for our votes.

Nevertheless, getting big money donations out of politics would be a big improvement.

For this brief moment in time, crime is legal.

The US was founded on crime. We are a colonial imperial country with a penchant for using racism and religion in order to maintain a certain lifestyle for white supremacists.

Slavery was really not that long ago, we are still actively invading countries and murdering people for oil, and we help bankroll straight up genocide in regions such as Darfur and Palestine.

This is business as usual.

We still do slavery and it's even kept in the 13th amendment as a punishment.

Whats wrong if US population has voted for this? There was no surprises this time - everyone can expect what is going to happen.

Didn’t the majority of people vote to “drain the swamp” and “bring down the cost of living”?

People had nearly a decade of experience with Donald Trump as a known political entity and decades of receipts and lawsuits prior to 2016 to speak to his amoral and corrupt nature. If they didn't know exactly what they were buying into they were idiots. He isn't exactly a master manipulator.

Also, The first time Trump was elected, the majority of voters went for Hillary Clinton. Second time, it was still 49% versus 48% for Kamala Harris. The majority of Americans have never voted for Donald Trump nor ever supported him.

I actually don't want to suffer just because my neighbor is racist.

I'm not saying I support either. I am just looking at US politics from outside. But this is how your democracy system works.

You asked, "Whats wrong if US population has voted for this?" in response to someone complaining that the system is not working, and so I explained it: the rest of us are not represented. I'm unsure what point you're getting at.

My point is: presidents are not delivered to your country by president delivery alien space ship. A lot of people voted for him and this is a fact. You cant just blame everyone of them for being dumb or racist. If you dont like their choice that means you should starting to do something about it.

Authorithorianism also not just happen - it take years to build and destroy institutions. It took 20 years to build fascist regime in my country.

Sorry for not making it clear enough.

The Christian right has been pushing for this forever. They finally acquired enough political and cultural purchase to get this measure pushed over the line.

There was a very large CME ten days ago. The NOAA scale had predicted a high likelihood of disruptions, and had specifically suggested that spacecraft and high altitude aircraft could be impacted.

FWIW the "industry sources say" line on the incident is that it occurred on 30 October[1], so further back than ten days ago but of course there may have been other CME incidents at that time.

The European Agency Aviation Safety Agency [2] instruction describes the characteristics of the incident but not the date.
