Obie is an insurtech building modern software and tooling for a heavily regulated industry. We ship customer-facing product and internal platforms that handle complex workflows, partner constraints, and real-world edge cases — with a strong emphasis on systems thinking, product quality, and moving quickly without being reckless.
Obie | YC S19 | Mid-Senior Frontend, Mid-Senior Backend | Chicago, IL. | Remote, Onsite (when available) | Full Time
Obie is looking for passionate, talented software engineers to join us (Mid-senior FE and BE) with experience in Javascript, React, Typescript, Node.js, GraphQL, Database. A small pivot in our journey has led to a strong product-market fit and we are moving quickly to build something incredible.
If you own a building with leases to tenants, you need insurance - whether the economy is growing or not. It is also an industry that has not evolved to use modern technology: workflows are manual, communication is messy and time-consuming, and people often don’t know what they’re buying or why they’re buying it. Obie sells commercial real estate insurance in a new way: one that emphasizes transparency and human-centric automation.
We are a venture-backed technology company. Our early success is in large part due to our unwavering standards in hiring. We recognize that our product is only as good as the people building and promoting it. We look for individuals who find solutions by going through the cycle of ideation to implementation with curiosity, rigor, and a highly analytical lens. Ask anyone who works here and you’ll hear similar reasons for joining:
- Autonomy. For assertive self-starters, the opportunities to contribute are limitless. - Impact. By challenging the way it's always been done, we solve problems that have a big impact on our business. - Collaboration. We encourage rich discussion and civil debate at every turn. - People. We are inspired by the collection of crazy-smart people around us.
At Obie, we judge people based on the merit of their work. If you are passionate about what this role entails, are excited by solving real problems, and you want to help shape the future of commercial real estate, we want to hear from you.
We’re based in Chicago and have an office in Florida, but (like everyone) we’re remote at the moment.
We welcome US/Canadian based remote applicants, but be warned: we’ll try to persuade you to move to the City by the Lake.
Email me directly for more info or to set up a chat! Would love to learn more about you: adam@obierisk.com

We're currently looking for a Senior UX/UI Product Designer to join our Toronto team! If you're ready to take ownership of the vision we have for our product and want to work with our technology, marketing, and product design teams to set the direction for Akira's product suite, let us know. We'd love to hear from you.
This article makes some interesting points, however I believe the author fails to differentiate the devices of which a web designer aims to market to potential clients versus what they are entirely capable of.
As a professional entrepreneur running my own company my career began with freelancing and instructing in web/print design. I won't claim to speak on my years of experience at that time of specific "business" knowledge as the author mentions (ROI, revenue goals, etc), nonetheless I never felt it appropriate to market my business skills on my design resumes and portfolios. While I agree wholeheartedly with the importance of understanding business models and revenue goals, I also feel it's not in the web designer's best interest to include these skills on a design portfolio.
All in all - it should be apparent that just because a web designer includes "buzzwords" such as "clean" and "modern" it certainly doesn't mean they don't grasp concepts such as ROI or revenue goals.
Thanks for taking a look. You have provided some excellent feedback on both our product and the website. We have been focusing the bulk of our efforts on the actual device over the last 10 months and have had little time for website revisions and promotion. As development approaches completion we are now starting to spend some time on product identity. Your suggestions are a great start for this. Thanks.
With the help from a large USA golf accessory manufacturer- we hope to see the product hit shelves in 2011.
Agreed. Even after reading this entire article I was unable to locate the app on my iPhone as I was searching for everything except justin.tv
Justin.tv should consider an updated business model where they branch out their video streaming products and rename them to increase comprehension for consumers.
From my understanding the iOS versions of AutoCad are in no way meant to serve as a replacement for the desktop version. But rather a very simplified version of the tools and features available.
As a designer, I can imagine being out for coffee or dinner with a potential client and not having my Macbook with me. Being able to pull out my iPhone or iPad and do a quick and dirty sketch of my thoughts/ideas to better convey the message could be incredibly useful. Much better than a standard cocktail napkin.
AutoCad is seeking to simply fill a void in a complete cross-hardware line. This addition will enable users to "CAD" wherever and whenever within certain constraints. These applications will work seamlessly together - so a quick sketch on your iPhone can later be redrawn and upgraded on your desktop.
