The electron-as-trapped photon model goes back a ways, to at least Roger Jennison (one of my old profs):

"What is an electron?": http://gsjournal.net/Science-Journals/Journal%20Reprints-Qua...

More recently, Larry Reed has developed a theory very similar to that mentioned in the article:

George Cayley would beg to differ: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Cayley

(or Leonardo da Vinci, for that matter)

There was also the dude in Brazil and another in France

I'm sure that I used to play this (or something very similar) a lot in the late 70s - I don't remember there being much "background" but the extremely bloody shark graphics were memorable!

TL;DR: When in doubt, update the BIOS before doing anything else.

Unless there is some vulnerability in the current version that you want to take advantage of. See e.g. mediatek exploit to unlock bootloaders without authorization by OEM or hacking PS4.

This. I went to install Linux on a brand new $3k ThinkPad, to do this you had to disable dedicated Nvidia graphics during the install. Doing this on the the included bios bricked the machine and it spent two months getting the motherboard replaced at OfficeMax (lenovo had a partnership with them at the time). It took me another few weeks to get them to swap it for a new one because I didn't pay for a refurbished machine.

> The 'working poor,' as they are approvingly termed, are in fact the major philanthropists of our society.

Hence the title of this book:

Then include the sales tax in the sticker price, like every other country does.

Unfortunately I think this is much easier said than done. No single store is going to want to make this change, because it'll make their prices look higher than the competitors'. It'd require legislation, (and even that'd likely be state-by-state legislation).

It also means a company wouldn't be able to advertise a single price for a product nationwide, since sales tax rates vary by state (and many times even within a state).

Also worth noting that Canada also doesn't include sales taxes.

They could do what every other country does, and include the sales tax in the shelf label price.

And the Mastermind variant "Word Mastermind" came out in 1972:

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5662/word-mastermind

But Word Mastermind (like regular Mastermind) only tells you how many letters are in the correct spot, and how many are present but not in the correct spot. Whereas Wordle tells you specifically which letters fall into those categories. So it's not quite the same. (That's why Wordle only gives you 6 guesses, while Word Mastermind has 10 rows.)

Ok but in regular Mastermind, you get a white key peg for every code peg that is present but not in the correct spot.

Wow! That box cover image immediately brings me back to digging through the family board game box kept under my parents' bed. Vividly remember it, it was one of those mysterious/never-played games.
