I often find myself in the bizarre situation of backing out of a suppliers website to google their contact number. A bit like when you want pricing on something without falling into a sales funnel.

Expert level:

sign up for the enterprise plan, get an account manager assigned to your account, request support from them, they’ll say you need to upgrade your plan to have a solutions engineer assigned to the account, upgrade your plan, then BOOM… you get your support query answered in only 3-5 business days.

Since there is a lot of space out there in the ocean I wonder if some kind of big floating energy station could be a thing, using middle of the ocean wind, tidal or solar. I guess you don't have to pay anyone for the space or worry about too many regulations etc.

Congratulations, you have just re-invented offshore (floating) wind turbines. https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ftsa&q=floating+wind+turbines+&ia=...

I'm ammused you think offshore energy is lawless. It's the same assumption that had the entire maritime community laughing at the clowns behind 'Seasteding" and the amusing MS Satoshi 'cryptoship'.

I found your reply unnecessarily snarky. The possibility I'l pondering would be to have a facility in deep ocean, far away from any countries coastline, but near shipping lanes.

I like your idea. We can now generate substantial amount of power from floating wind turbines. Coupled with floating batteries (ie on cargo ships) we perhaps build floating charging stations along major shipping routes. There is no need for nuclear or to only charge at ports. Would it work?

I have a BMW PHEV. There's a 3 cyl turbo engine with an auto box at the front and a 90hp electric motor and 7.6kwh battery at the back. Most of the new ones just have a more traditional layout with an electric motor built into the autobox. You get more elec range than a hybrid but less than a full EV. Now that it's cold I start my commute on engine to get the car warmed up with 'free' heat then switch to EV later. If I want to beat someone off the lights I use both together.

I remember the one where you got physically bigger every time you killed someone, until you couldn't fit through doorways etc. And smaller and smaller every time you died. It was pretty hilarious.

It's a shame there isn't something like Lineage OS for Apple mobile devices.

The blame is on Apple, that I hate as much as any other company that locks their bootloader.

Nobody's forcing anyone to live in a city, they want to because the jobs and culture and opportunities are there. And companies want to be there because that's where the workers are. It's a feedback loop, I guess cost is the main moderator. There is an argument for decentralizing a little but surely it's the governments job to incentivize that.

What's the advantage of this vs just setting the site up on a free cloudflare plan and use a caching rule?

Easier for non-technical wordpress users who would struggle setting it up themselves.

Cool so the value you provide is much of the benefit of CF but without messing with nameservers etc. (scary). If you don't understand all the techie bits you're going to read 'CDN plugin' and be filed in that basket so I'd work on how to differentiate and market yourself in that space.

Thanks, that is exactly the angle I am leaning into. The whole point is to give users most of the benefits of Cloudflare without having to move nameservers or deal with caching rules or the dashboard. For people who already use Cloudflare directly, this might not be needed. For everyone else, it removes a lot of the steps that usually cause support tickets or confusion.

I agree about the positioning. I am updating the wording so it is clear that this is not trying to compete with Cloudflare’s full feature set or with full image optimization plugins. It is more of a simple “use Cloudflare as your image CDN” switch for the long tail of WordPress sites that will never touch DNS settings.

If you have thoughts on how to phrase that more clearly, I am open to ideas.

I was taken by how freely they spent months of man hours on things to go 'meh' and casually throw them away. Different world. Quite holistic with their production costs

Once production starts the costs for many roles are locked in and they work till it wraps, often due to union rules and contracts. Anyone working in parallel with the film crews just does whatever the director/producers prioritizes since they’re not getting sent home.

It's definitely a different world though because you’re not supposed to go under budget. If investors give you $100mil to make a movie, they want to maximize the return on that $100mil, so if you’re $5mil under budget, they want you to go and spend that money to make it even better (usually in post production now, but back then it was less of an option).

That's a great explanation thanks. There are many types of customers around and not many spend like that. They're treating it as an investment in a very direct way I guess.

Imagine what a big piece of iron could do, it makes me think of the stories recently of people who came out of cloud and run everything of one or few bare metal hosts.

That's the point!

I wonder if that's why the cpu is idle for part of the time, it's waiting for sockets to become free.
